DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

70 for 70

Many people start thinking about putting their feet up and taking it easy when they reach 70, but not Walter Wells. He reached for his walking boots.

Walter turned 70 on December 13th 2007, and for his birthday decided to fly to Patagonia, one of the few places with enough daylight in December to make a ONE DAY 70 KILOMETRE trek.

Some of his friends and family who have been personally affected by breast cancer accompanied him, but this was really Walter’s Walk – now famously known as The Wally Walk.

Walter, his partner Shelley and family wanted to use the walk to raise much-needed funds for Cancerkin.

“Walter’s first wife and the mother of his three sons, Joan, died of the disease in 1996.  In 2001, I was treated for the first time – one and a half years after Walter and I were married – by a remarkable breast cancer surgeon, Mr Santilal Parbhoo. Walter and I have really felt that the care that Santi and his team have given over the past years (I had a second primary breast cancer in 2005) has been truly exceptional. It is a rare surgeon who will take as much time as he has to treat the whole person and her family, explaining things carefully, assuaging our concerns, addressing alternatives and helping us cope emotionally.

We live in London but come from the United States where surgeons barely know your name let alone spend any time nursing through your angst. CANCERKIN really epitomises Mr Santi’s commitment to a philosophy of medicine which treats not just the disease but the person.”   Shelley Nason

Anniversary At Home

With very little effort, a small donation and some willing friends you have the potential of raising huge amounts of money to help breast cancer patients.

We have launched anniversary at home as an activity that will run throughout Cancerkin's 20th anniversary year.

'Starter hosts' hold an anniversary at home - a lunch, dinner, tea or just a coffee morning.  They invite 10 friends, each of whom makes a small donation of, say, £5 and pledges to hold his/her own event for 9 guests.  They in turn hold their own anniversary at home for 8 guests and so on.

If everyone invited by one starter host holds their own anniversary at home and all their guests do the same we could end up with nearly 8 million participants.  Think of the difference that could make to breast cancer sufferers!

Anyone can take part and if you invite friends, relatives, business associates and neighbours who will be willing to hold their own anniversay at home, your initial contribution will multiply enormously. Cancerkin held a similar event many years ago and received donations from Cancerkin gatherings held in places as far apart as Edinburgh, Toronto and Cape Town!

Each event will contribute to Cancerkin's £1 million anniversary target and we will send you a pack.

“When you came to see me nearly a year ago, I was very receptive to your offers of help. But I could have no idea how much Cancerkin would do for me over this difficult year.”
