2006 SWING TIME TEA DANCE - a celebration of the life of Manja Leigh On June 11th 2006, nearly 200 guests were treated to an afternoon of music, glamour and nostalgia at the Cancerkin Swing Time Tea Dance, which raised the magnificent sum of £44,000. Radio presenter and musical aficionado Ned Sherrin compered the event as the Landmark Hotel in Marylebone swung to the sounds of a magical bygone era with John Wilson and his orchestra playing the music of Geraldo, the great bandleader of the ‘40s and 50s.
True to form, Ned delighted the audience with his sparkling anecdotes. Amateur ballroom dance champions Warren and Kristi Boyce added glamour and panache with a display of dancing, dazzling the audience with the agility of their moves.
The afternoon also saw a spectacular raffle draw with prizes ranging from manicures and hairdressing appointments to food hampers and crystal vases. The raffle alone raised more than £2000. Cancerkin is very grateful to all those who generously donated prizes including: Bradley’s Restaurant, Crabtree and Evelyn, Fenwicks-Brent Cross, Harvey Nichols, Mrs Helly Bliss Williams, R.Holt &Co Ltd, Ignes Handbags, Joseph’s Hair Salon, The Landmark London, Lovely Little Box Co.Ltd, Manaz Beauty Salon, Ozzis Hair Salon and The Philharmonia Orchestra.
As well as our demonstration dancers and Ned Sherrin, other celebrities included Felicity Finch who plays Ruth Archer in the ‘Archers’, Cancerkin patron Janet Suzman and Diana Moran, aka ‘the Green Goddess’, who generously donated a copy of her book on health and fitness towards the raffle. All enhanced the spirit of the occasion and helped enthusiastically with the raffle draw.
The event was held in celebration of the life of one of Cancerkin’s much loved and generous patrons, Manja Leigh who had, at one time, been married to Geraldo. Throughout the afternoon glowing tributes were paid to Manja, whose life was characterised by her generosity and charitable works and she was given a fitting champagne toast proposed by Lady Solti, a long-time friend.
The funds raised from the Tea Dance are being used to endow the first Manja Leigh Fellowship in Lymphoedema. The Cancerkin Lymphoedema Clinic is the only comprehensive free service available in London and demand is very high. At present the clinic is only funded to provide specialist therapy necessary to treat this condition on three mornings a week. However, the appointment of the first Manja Leigh Fellow will allow Cancerkin to introduce additional sessions, so that the waiting list for treatment can be substantially reduced.

OTHER TESTIMONIALS “When you came to see me nearly a year ago, I was very receptive to your offers of help. But I could have no idea how much Cancerkin would do for me over this difficult year.” Gillian |
