2002 The Lord Jakobovits Commemorative Lectures A series of 4 annual lectures with a strong ethical theme, to commemorate the life and work of the late Lord Jakobovits was given in the Sir William Wells Atrium at the Royal Free Hospital . The inaugural lecture in 2001 was delivered by The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Woolf, followed in 2002 by Prof. Sir Ian Kennedy, until recently Professor of Health Law, Ethics and Policy at University College , London and Chairman of the Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry. Dame Ruth Deech, former Chairman of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Association and Prof Sir Liam Donaldson, Chief Medical Officer for England delivered the third and final lectures in 2003 and 2004 respectively. The texts of these 4 prestigious lectures will be published in aid of Cancerkin, in a slim volume during 2005. (The top picture shows patrons Lady Jakobovits and Lady Mountbatten.) Cancerkin's 15th Anniversary Luncheon The glitzy Hotel Intercontinental in Hamilton Place, W1 was the venue for a superb celebratory lunch, preceded by a champagne reception, for 250 guests who helped us celebrate 15 years of achievement. Guest speaker Clive Anderson entertained and later drew the Raffle. Many of Cancerkin's longstanding patrons and friends supported the occasion including the Countess Mountbatten of Burma, Janet Suzman, Lady Blank, Gareth Hunt, Fay Weldon, Tasmin Little, Lady Jakobovits. Dr. Lotte Newman chaired the event which raised £51,000 for Cancerkin. Rededication of Cancerkin Centre This celebratory 15th year also saw the major extension and refurbishment of the Cancerkin Centre. Completion of the project was celebrated on the 7th October with a rededication ceremony attended by invited friends, patrons and major supporters. The bottom picture shows Professor Dame Carol Black, president of the Royal College of Physicians with the commemorative plaque she unveiled. For more information click here. OTHER TESTIMONIALS “When you came to see me nearly a year ago, I was very receptive to your offers of help. But I could have no idea how much Cancerkin would do for me over this difficult year.” Gillian |
